More words

Hey people, Charlie here. I’ve got some exciting news for you today! I started writing at Ficly! *silence* *cricket chirps* Oh, wait! You probably don’t know what Ficly is, do you? Ficly is a website where people write stories. It is really cool. You can only use 1024 characters in a story. That includes spaces, punctuation, formatting, etc. So you have to be really clear and concise in your writing. But, just wait, it gets even more unbelievably awesome! You can write sequels and prequels to other people’s stories! I know it’s very exciting, but please keep your squeals of excitement to yourself. I have started writing there, and I would love it if you would drop by, read my stuff, and leave a comment. If you’re a writer of any kind, I strongly suggest you go try it out. Here’s the link to my stories: http://ficly.com/authors/charliekilcrease. So go check it out, please! Bye!

Lazy…

Hey Internets, I know I promised you a short story, but I’m lazy. Seriuosly. The story is coming, though. I’m putting the final tweaks on it, and it will be ready tomorrow! I would like to take this time to talk about how awesome Pandora is, though. For those of you who don’t know, (which is probably a very small number) Pandora is a website where you type in the name of an artist and song, and it creates a station that will play that artist and others like them! It’s a really cool way to find new music that you wouldn’t normally listen to. I made an Oingo Boingo station today, because I’ve been on an 80s’ New Wave kick lately. It made my day when “London Calling” by the Clash came on there today! It’s my favorite Clash song. Then, to make my day even more awesome, my Nada Surf station started playing The Shins AND The Strokes! :) So, go check out www.pandora.com if you haven’t already! Bye!

You just keep trying until you run out of cake…

Hello Internet, it’s your best friend, Charlie. I haven’t written anything since last Tuesday. Wow, way to fail there, Kilcrease. I know that some of you have been wondering if I was ever going to write again, and to those two or three people, I say that I am back and writing now! I have been in a total creative slump lately. I blame it on school starting back and killing my creative vibes for a few days, but I have been trying to get back in my weird, creative, writerly place. I think I have done that. I’ve been working on a short story that I will hopefully put on here tomorrow. The key word there is hopefully. So, as the song says, you just keep on trying till you run out of cake! What happens when you run out of cake? Well, you run out of cake, duh. Awww, now I’m sad. Me too, but, hey, you know what will cheer you up?! What? Cake! I has some in the kitchen! It’s delicous and moist and totally not a lie! Awesome, let’s go! Oh wait, first you have to throw your Weighted Companion Cube in the incinerator. Why? I love my Companion Cube! It never tried to stab me! Yeah, but, there’s a door to the kitchen that Cube can’t go through. Why? Look, it’s okay, just burn it, and you can have cake! It’s not a lie! Ok, I’m going to stop here, because the joke has stopped being funny even to me… I can’t say that. It’s still hilarious! But, if you want more hilarity like that, go buy Portal, the game I stole most of that from. It is insanely fun and hilarious. I am going to stop, though. I am going to stop and walk away. Nothing you can say is going to bring me back… except “Hey, I have a million dollars for you! In diamonds! And they’re encrusted on a 58′ Les Paul! I have a diamond encrusted 58′ Gibson Les Paul worth a million dollars for you if you come back!” There, that is my price. You have one day to decide.

Books, books, books

Hey guys, it’s Charlie! Today the topic is books: books that I love, books I’ve read recently, and books I think you should read. So settle in, because I’m going to try to keep this post short, but it will probably be really long (that’s what she said!). Ok, I love fantasy and science fiction books, so I love The Lord of the Rings (big surprise, right?) I also love every book R.A. Salvatore has written. Seriously. I really love the Dragonlance novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I haven’t read one I didn’t like. I really enjoyed The Last Season: A Team in Search of its Soul by Phil Jackson, which is about his last season with the Lakers before he retired. Of course, he had what is now known as Favre Syndrome and came back to coach them to a championship (this isn’t in the book, I’m just a huge Lakers fan.) If you’re a Lakers fan or just a basketball fan, you should really pick this book up. I recently read Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, which is a fantastic book, and I highly recommend it. I’ve started reading other books by Cory, and he is an awesome science fiction author, and if you’re a sci-fi fan, go get a Cory Doctorow book. You won’t be disappointed. I also just finished reading Just A Geek and Memories of the Future by Wil Wheaton. I’ve got to tell ya, Wil is just an incredibly funny guy. I laughed out loud so many times while reading Memories of the Future, which was kind of bad, because I read it on the Stanza app on my iPod while I was out and about. I got a few strange looks… but I didn’t care because I was busting a gut. The stories on his blog and in his books: Dancing Barefoot, Sunken Treasure, The Happiest Days of our Lives, and Just A Geek are unflinchingly honest and laugh-out-loud funny. So, go buy everything Wil Wheaton has ever written, and follow him on Twitter (if you have one; if you don’t have a Twitter, I only have one question: What’s wrong with you?) And don’t hate him just because he played Wesley Crusher, because that’s profiling, and profiling is wrong. Another book that everybody should read is Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. It’s just a great book, and Selby’s writing style is really innovative and all-around fantastic. So, these are books I love and that I think you should read. Go buy them right now. Trust me, I’m famous… ok, I’m not really famous, but you should seriously go read some of these books. I am going to leave you with an excerpt from R.A. Salvatore’s Sea of Swords.

We are all dying, every moment that passes of every day. That is the inescapable truth of this existence. It is a truth that can paralyze us with fear, or one that can energize us with impatience, with the desire to explore and experience, with the hope – nay, the iron will! – to find a memory in every action. To be alive, under sunshine or under starlight, in weather fair or stormy. To dance every step, be they through gardens of bright flowers or through deep snows.

The young know this truth so many of the old, or even middle-aged, have forgotten. Such is the source of the anger, the jealousy, that so many exhibit toward the young. So many times have I heard the common lament, “If only I could go back to that age, knowing what I now know!” Those words amuse me profoundly, for in thruth, the lament should be, “If only I could reclaim the lust and joy I knew then!”

That is the meaning of life, I have come at last to understand, and in that undrestanding, I have indeed found that lust and that joy. A life of twenty years where that lust and joy, where that truth is understood might be more full than a life of centuries with head bowed and shoulders slumped.

I love those three paragraphs. Let them roll around in your head. Signing off! Bye!

In which Charlie has nothing to write about

Hey Internet peoples, it’s me again. I don’t really have anything to write about today, if you couldn’t tell by the title. School started back today, but I’m gonna wait until tomorrow, after I’ve had all of my classes, to write about them. Ah, I do want to talk about one thing that I saw today that I would like to bring to your attention: windowless white vans. This is becoming an epidemic. I mean, who buys these things? Unless there is the name of an electrical company, air conditioning business, or some sort of plumber on the side, windowless white vans are not okay. If you see one, drive as far away as possible. I can’t look at one without imagining a clown suit, toys, and a box of balloons and sedatives in the back. That’s right, I went there. It’s the truth, though. Windowless white vans are just creepy. And the guys that drive these things are always old, angry, and creepy. So, I guess the point I’m trying to make is: stay away from windowless white vans. Stranger danger, kids. I had a substitute teacher in high school that would say that everytime we would ask to go somewhere. “May I go to the restroom?” “Sure, but remember: stranger danger!” I was like, really dude? We go to a school of about 500 students (my graduating class had 48 or so in it). There are no strangers here. Even if somebody’s parent was out there, we would know them. That is how small my school was. See, this is what happens when I have nothing to write about. I pick something totally random and ramble on about it. Seriously though, avoid windowless white vans, and don’t accept van candy from strangers. Just something to think about. Until next time! Bye!

I got excited and wrote stuff

Hello Internet, it’s nice to see you. It’s been a long time, you’re just as lovely as you used to be. Thank you, Mr. Conway Twitty, for writing that song, and I hope you don’t sue me! Who am I kidding? Conway Twitty doesn’t read my blog. Ok, it’s time to get down to business. As the title says, I got excited and creative and wrote something today. I wanted to share it with you, because I like it and am proud of it. I hope you like it too. If you do like it, please leave a comment. It will totally make my day if someone comments on this post! If you don’t like it, then go read some other blog that you like, I guess. So, here is what I wrote today!

I love days like today. It’s cold, but the sun’s glow makes a valiant effort to warm me. The tempature is almost bearable, until the chill wind starts blowing again, ruffling my hair like a playful tousle from an old friend. As I walk towards the big oak tree in our yard, a single brown leaf falls, having finally lost its fight to stay on the branch. Before it hits the ground, the wind catches the leaf and sends it dancing and skipping across the yard. The wind pauses for a brief second, and the leaf comes to a stop beneath another tree. A bird swoops down and scoops the leaf up in its beak, apparently needing it for a nest. The sun realizes the wind has stopped and tries to warm me again. I bask in its glow and breathe a sigh of happiness. I love days like today.

Hey, how about that? I wrote it! Yeah, it’s short, but I am really proud of it. I just wanted to share it with you, and I hope you liked it. So, I am signing off for now. Bye!

The Obligatory Music Post

Hey there Internet, it’s your old pal Charlie! Today, I am going to talk about the music I love and grew up listening to. So, here we go! I remember riding in the car with my dad when I was probably 4 or 5 and listening to stuff like AC/DC, Guns n’ Roses, Kiss, Motley Crue, and other great bands like that. I can remember listening to ‘TNT’ by AC/DC and doing the oi oi oi TNT chant. It’s all fantastic music that I still listen to today, and I seriously want to thank my dad for giving me great taste in music. I know when I have kids, I will be like my dad and make them listen to the bands that I love, no matter how much they hate it. :)  And I can remember riding in John’s (my uncle) Dodge and listening to Rob Zombie (this was before he became a big horror movie director and just kind of quit the music scene.) Oh, but then, the late 90s’ happened, and I and my brother, like everyone else, listened to boybands and Brittney Spears. I know, it’s an epic fail, but back then, it was cool. Facepalm. Ok, that was an embarassing memory. Facepalm, facepalm, facepalm. Then, I went through a phase where I didn’t listen to any music. Seriously, I hated all music for some reason. Then, there were the teenage years. Oh, the teenage years! Why am I talking like that was ages ago? I’m still technically a teenager! In my early teenage years, I went through a rap phase. Did you ever have a rap phase? Well, I had one, unfortunately. Then, I played Guitar Hero at Wal-mart. I had an awakening of the soul and fell in love with rock n’ roll again. Oh, I still listen to some rap, but it’s pretty much just Lil Wayne now. I begged my parents to buy me Guitar Hero, and thank goodness, they did! Say what you want about Guitar Hero, but if it wasn’t for that game, there’s no telling what I would be listening to. Now my iPod is dominated by Metallica, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, and other totally and completely awesome bands like that. While my tastes have been refined, they have also expanded. One of my absolute favorite musicians is Sara Bareilles. I just love her so much and cannot wait for the next album. So, I hope you liked this post and didn’t think of it as one of those “my music is better than yours, nyah nyah” things, because it’s not. I just wanted to reflect on the music I love and why I love it. I will go more in depth about my music in future posts, but this one is already way too long! Signing off for now! See ya later!

Hello world!

Hello Internet! My name is Charlie, and this is my online journal web log, or as the kids today call it, my “blog”! I am in my freshman year of college. I love music of all genres and styles (seriously, my iPod goes from Metallica, Led Zeppelin, and Alice in Chains to Michael Buble, Sara Bareilles, and Katy Perry). I’m also kind of a geek. I read lots of books, mainly fantasy and science fiction. I play alot of WoW. I was always one of those guys that said, “Why would you want to pay for a game every month? That’s just stupid!” Then, I downloaded the free trial, got hooked on it, and started paying every month! That is the meaning of irony my friends! On the opposite end of the spectrum, I am a huge football fanatic! I played defensive tackle in high school. I enjoy working out and lifting wieghts, even though I haven’t been to the gym in a while. I plan on starting back soon, though. Ok, this was my first blog! I hope you learned a little bit about me, and I hope you stick with me and read these things! Since this was my first one, I was a little nervous about what I wanted to write. I figured I would introduce myself and talk about me, obviously. That sentence probably should have gone at the top of the post, but like I said this is my first post and I didn’t know what to write about. I will try to write something everyday. I am going to try and write about funny things I see during the day or things that I find interesting, and I hope you find my musings as awesome as I do. So, I am signing off for now. See you later!
